Thursday ... 5/28 ... ESSAY FINAL DRAFTS DUE ... 4 days remaining, Seniors!

OBJ: Students will continue working to edit and revise their literary analysis of Lord of the Flies. Students will also begin working on Final Exam Reviews.

  • Lord of the Flies Essay - Your FINAL DRAFT is due today - the paper should be submitted, stapled, as follows ... if you have not submitted any part of the process for eval by me (rough draft - daily grade; editing - 1 quiz grade for having yours edited, another for editing another students paper) at this time, all missing grades will become a zero regardless of whether or not the info is stapled behind your final drafts.
    • FINAL DRAFT with WORKS CITED (on top) ... to clarify, because this has caused confusion for some who've misread it ... The FINAL DRAFT ... with the works cited page (all in MLA format and in MLA order) will be on top of the rest of the process.  If you fail at this in ANY way shape or form, there will be a 50 point simpleton tax deducted from your grade.
    • Peer Editing Checklist
    • Rough Draft
    • Prewriting

  • Reviews and Exams - The regular English IV review is available on the desk in the lab.  I recommend you complete all parts of the review ... however, it is not mandatory, nor is it for a grade - nor will you be able to use it on the exam.  I recommend you also revisit the Frankenstein questions you answered in your blogs AND the Study Questions for Lord of the Flies.  You will turn in your completed LotF study questions prior to your exam.
    • Friday, 5/29 - 3rd Period Exam (May be finished on Monday if needed)
    • Monday, 6/1 - 1st Period Exam (additional time for 3rd period testers after school)
    • Tuesday, 6/2 - 2nd and 4th Period Exams

  • Exemptions - The following students have the POSSIBILITY of being exempt from the exam pending your grade in this class (which will depend heavily on the essay we are completing) - if fines are noted, you MUST clear them as well with the bookkeeper AND show me a receipt in that amount from the bookkeeper to be exempt).

Thursday, May 21st ... 10 Days Remaining (8 for Seniors)

OBJ - Students will read and analyze literary elements of Lord of the Flies

CWoDs (2 of them today) - SALUTATION & VALEDICTION
  • Get a copy of the novel from the crate on top of the Chromebook cart. Keep track of your packet - there will not be extras made. (you will have roughly 5 minutes at the beginning of class to do THIS and get your CWoD completed before we begin reading).  Keep your background info notes handy as you ready to refer to as we venture further into the novel.

There are no extra copies of the study questions - so if you lost yours or did not get one last week for some reason, you'll have to print your own from here:

  • TODAY - We will CONTINUE writing a thematic analysis and response to William Golding's Lord of the Flies. Be sure to read and follow all requirements or your grade(s) will be penalized. Your prompt is as follows:
What does the novel reveal about Golding's views of human nature? Do you agree or disagree?

Length: 300-500 words

Structure: Minimum 6 well developed paragraphs / MLA Format

1) Introduction - including your thesis focusing on Golding's views with 3 supports

2) Support 1 - with quotes/proof from the novel

3) Support 2 - with quotes/proof from the novel

4) Support 3 - with quotes/proof from the novel

5) Personal response - agree/disagree ... Explain with evidence

6) Conclusion

***you MUST cite your sources - including the novel - if you plagiarize, intentionally or not, all grades related to this essay will become a zero***

Tasks and Due Dates -
Prewriting/Planning/Outlining - due asap - 1 Daily Grade (you will not be able to proceed until I've seen your prewriting and recorded a grade)

Rough Draft - Due by the EOC on Thursday - 1 Daily Grade

Peer Editing - will be done in class on Friday - 2 minor grades (1 for editing others, 1 for being prepared to participate in class on time)

Final Draft - work on in class Tuesday and Wednesday - due by EOS Wednesday - 2 major grades

***prewriting and rough draft MUST be handwritten. Final draft will be typed. Incorrect submission format will result in a 30 point penalty.

***Final draft and works cited MUST be in MLA format (like your research papers were)

***We will have a guest speaker on Wednesday, therefore you will have to likely work on the rough draft outside of class to have it finished and turned in on time Thursday. If you are not prepared on Friday (or unexcusedly absent, 1 of the 2 quiz grades will be a zero and may not be recoverable).

***any issues or conflicts must be discussed with me as early as possible

ALTERNATE TOPIC OPTION:
Look comparatively at Golding's view of human nature in Lord of the Flies as opposed to Shelley's in Frankenstein.  How are they alike - how do they differ - cite evidence from the novels to support your assertions.  Which one is more accurate?  Explain.

Structure:
1) Introduction - w/ thesis and three points of analysis/comparison
2) Point 1
3) Point 2
4) Point 3
