Lord of the Flies EXAM ... We will use an essay format for this exam.  You will choose 2 of the questions below to answer.  You may NOT analyze the same character in both essay choices.  You will be allowed to use the book, your notes, your study guides, and any internet resources you can find - HOWEVER YOUR RESPONSES MUST BE YOUR OWN with quotes from the novel to support the points you make.

  1. Explain the degeneration in Jack’s personality from the first hunt to the last.  Support with specific details from the novel and movie.
  2. In the novel Lord of the Flies, William Golding develops the theme of the conflict between the rules of society and man's natural instinct toward savagery.  Choose a character from the novel and show how he illustrates the development and meaning of this theme.  Be sure to include specific details from the novel.
  3. Some of the characters in Golding’s novel exhibit courageous qualities.  Choose a character you feel exhibits courage in some way and write an essay explaining the role courage plays in facing challenging situations.  Be sure to include specific examples from the novel.
  4. Beastial, savage, evil qualities exist in all men.  Cite specific examples of the boys’ cruelties that can be called “beastial.”
  5. Explain how the motto “Survival of the Fittest” is an appropriate description of island society.  Choose a character and support with specific details from the novel.

Your answers must be handwritten and turned in by the end of class tomorrow.  Each response should be 200-300 words in length - for a total of 400-600 words of writing.  This is the final major grade of your high school career ... don't skimp.  Make it count.

WARM UP
