January 30 ... Late Start ... Research Topics and Stuff

  • Today's Special Schedule ...
  • Last Call for Research Topics ...

  • Today you have one job ... begin making your list of your research preferences. You will need to list 5 options.  We will not have duplicate topics within a class period; and I will try to avoid too many duplicates from class to class beyond that.
  • Using the list of topics below, use Google (or other search engines) to research what the topics is about.  You will be doing a lot of work in terms of researching, narrowing, and writing about your topic (once it is assigned) so it is CRUCIAL that it be something of some interest to you.
  • Topics will be assigned based on the options you submit - there will be no topic changes once we begin the research process.
  • If you find a topic related to British history, literature, or prominent people from Britain you would like me to consider, add it to your list and discuss it with me tomorrow.

Tuesday, January 15 ... Finish the Satire Journal

Finish the journal assigned yesterday - info from yesterday copied and pasted below so you don't even have to go back (all info is also provided with the assignment in Canvas).

Using the extremely antiquated article I read to you last week ("How to Be a Good Wife" from a 1950s Home Economics textbook), you will write a satirical list of 9-10 things you need to do to be a "good" ... boyfriend/girlfriend ... student ... son/daughter ... or whatever you choose.  Be creative.  Have some fun with it.

But remember that, at the heart of satire, there is a lesson to be learned or a point being made.  Use humor, sarcasm, irony, etc ... but again ... and I STRESS ... have a purpose for your satire and be sure that you accomplish it.

    • 9-10 Items in your list
    • 2-3 Sentences per item
    • Must contain: HUMOR or SARCASM or IRONY
    • Must also: make a valid and effective point to your reader
    • QUIZ GRADE
Submit through Canvas no later than midnight tomorrow (1/15/2019) or it will be considered late.  We will work on it in class tomorrow as well.  Late work accepted until midnight on Friday (1/18/2019).

The original reading "How to Be a Good Wife" is below...

Thursday, January 10 ... Review Satire and Read "My Mother Never Worked"

Essential Question - WHY is satire a more effective tool for criticizing society and improving society than a direct approach?

    • SATIRE is a literary technique in which behaviors or institutions are ridiculed for the purpose of improving society.  What sets SATIRE apart from other forms of social and political protest is HUMOR.
    • HUMOR allows the writer or speaker the opportunity to connect with the reader despite possible differences in thoughts and ideologies - humor helps to break down the walls.

    • Read "My Mother Never Worked" as a class - as we read, underline or circle anything within the essay that seems or sounds like "work"
    • After reading, answer the reading analysis questions that go with the essay.
